Brown-Peterson spectra in stable A-homotopy theory

چکیده
We characterize ring spectra morphisms from the algebraic cobordism spectrum MGL ([12]) to an oriented spectrum E (in the sense of Morel [4]) via formal group laws on the ”topological” subring E∗ = ⊕iE 2i,i of E∗∗. This result is then used to construct for any prime p a motivic Quillen idempotent on MGL(p). This defines the BP -spectrum associated to the prime p as in Quillen’s [6] for the complex-oriented topological case.

A lower bound for coherences on the Brown–Peterson spectrum
We provide a lower bound for the coherence of the homotopy commutativity of the Brown–Peterson spectrum, BP , at a given prime p and prove that it is at least (2p2 + 2p− 2)–homotopy commutative. We give a proof based on Dyer–Lashof operations that BP cannot be a Thom spectrum associated to n–fold loop maps to BSF for n = 4 at 2 and n = 2p + 4 at odd primes. Other examples where we obtain estima...
متن کاملAutomorphic forms and cohomology theories on Shimura curves of small discriminant
We apply Lurie’s theorem to produce spectra associated to 1dimensional formal group laws on the Shimura curves of discriminants 6, 10, and 14. We compute rings of automorphic forms on these curves and the homotopy of the associated spectra. At p = 3, we find that the curve of discriminant 10 recovers much the same as the topological modular forms spectrum, and the curve of discriminant 14 gives...
متن کاملMonoidal Uniqueness of Stable Homotopy Theory
We show that the monoidal product on the stable homotopy category of spectra is essentially unique. This strengthens work of this author with Schwede on the uniqueness of models of the stable homotopy theory of spectra. Also, the equivalences constructed here give a unified construction of the known equivalences of the various symmetric monoidal categories of spectra (S-modules, W -spaces, orth...
متن کاملOn Freyd’s Generating Hypothesis
We revisit Freyd’s generating hypothesis in stable homotopy theory. We derive new equivalent forms of the generating hypothesis and some new consequences of it. A surprising one is that I, the Brown-Comenetz dual of the sphere and the source of many counterexamples in stable homotopy, is the cofiber of a self map of a wedge of spheres. We also show that a consequence of the generating hypothesi...
متن کاملSpectra and Stability
ΣY Σ f −→ΣX →ΣX ∪Σ f CΣY. Together, these turn a CW-structure on a space X into a CW-structure on ΣX by shifting all the cells of X up one dimension. There’s an analogous shift operation in graded algebraic contexts: the suspension of a graded group, for instance, is given by the formula (ΣG)n+1 =Gn . Much of modern homotopy theory revolves around the study of stable invariants, which are invar...
